Project Description
As part of the larger scale restoration and rehabilitation of historical buildings, the city of Edmonton entrusted Delnor Construction and SAT Consulting and Construction to manage the restoration of the Keillor cabin. The work entitled the lifting of the house and meticulous restoration of original materials, including windows, flooring, chimney, and other architectural components. SAT completed the full scope of interior selective demolition, abatement, and window removal rehabilitation. This project consisted of multiple separated containments and working on multiple areas simultaneously at similar stages.
Technology, Innovation, and Sustainability
Salvaging materials was not a requirement for this project; however, a large number of oversized wood beams were carefully extracted, removed, and re-purposed through donation, which saved the City the cost of waste removal and kept material from being taken to the landfills.
Project Challenges Overcome
- Involved matching many different materials, and dealing with a large number of structural components whose integrity were unknown, requiring special attention and unique equipment.
- Some buildings presented large unknowns, such as unidentified, unmarked, and unregistered underground oil and waste tanks that had to be carefully excavated and decommissioned.
- Little space to work, and adjacent to residential areas so SAT had to be conscious of our impact on the community.
