Project Description
As part of the EXPO rehabilitation project, SAT was hired to perform structural, selective and abatement demolition at the EXPO Centre, including trusses, walls, and ceilings. SAT also had to demolish selective portions of halls A, B, C, and D. This project had a lot of moving parts, and Angel ensured that all parts of the project were well managed, and that the project’s aggressive timelines were met.

Project Description
As part of the larger scale Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion Project, the City of Edmonton looked to complete the demolition and hazardous materials abatement of a series of buildings around Yellowhead Trail and Fort Road. Contracted by the City of Edmonton, SAT completed the full scope of demolition work for this portion of the project. Seven buildings in total were completely abated, demolished, and removed. The space created by the removal of these buildings will allow for the future Yellowhead Trail conversion.
Technology, Innovation, and Sustainability Info
Salvaging materials was not a requirement for this project; however, a large number of oversized wood beams were carefully extracted, removed, and re-purposed through donation, which saved the City the cost of waste removal and kept material from being taken to landfills.
Project Challenges Overcome
- Five of the buildings were in close proximity to each other, which required mobilization, and equipment to be fit to the specific demolition and abatement area.
- Some buildings presented large unknowns, such as unidentified, unmarked, and unregistered underground oil and waste tanks that had to be carefully excavated and decommissioned.
- Little space to work and adjacent to residential areas, so SAT had to be conscious of impact on the community.
